I was just thinking...my first experience with ISS, might be worthy to open a topic so everybody can tell his/hers first experiences with the beautiful game. This is my story...I call it: 'The birth of a true master'

It was...the summer of '99 I think. Playstation 2 wasn't there yet (over here) and I had my PS1 for one year now. Was playing a few games (very) frequently, NBA '99, Gran Turismo and my first game, World Cup '98 (i'm sorry, got it from my parents and didn't knew there was another jewel on the market...). This summer I was playing a lot of PS1, it was great to play WC 98 with friends and I loved to play NBA, my season with San Antonio Spurs was fantastic, really knew that game inside-out! One day, I went to a mate of mine, he had Fifa '98. I loved that one too, especially the fantastic intro-movie (Blur-Song 2...what a thriller!). He had another game, ISS '98, but he disliked it, because he said it was too difficult...I said to him I would love to play him and he said (it was late) 'tomorrow'. Next day he called me, he said he trained whole day on ISS 98 and did like the game now, got pretty used to it he said. I left from my home, early in the evening on a nice sunny summerday. I arrived at his place, he was playing some training matches to show me his skills. He was pretty good, knew how to do the controls and things like that. I was used to the Fifa-controlls, so I asked him to play 1 training match against the CPU (France vs. Peru or something like that) and he agreed. It was a * match, pretty easy and I liked the controls from the beginning. The R1-sprint-control was pretty new, and tricky. I only used it when I had loads of space and lost the ball still frequently. After that, I was going to play my first match of ISS '98 against my friend...I was so excited, because I loved the gameplay, felt so damn realistic...wasn't used to the power-gauge but that's no shame, everybody who plays the game (still notice that on PES3 now) for the first times isn't used to that. I was going to play my friend, the match was Holland (me) vs. France (he)...10 minutes, **. He said he felt like winning and I said: "I just feel so happy playing this game, it feels so good, I don't care, you are supposed to win because you played this 100 times before and are used to the controls." He was laughing, said he was going to kill me (I killed him in all the other games, was a pretty-talented little gamer). Game started. He had much more possesion, was a great dribbler but I had a bit of a view for the game, felt a bit where he was going and slide very well. When I had the ball, I tried to x-pass it a lot, just to keep some possesion and try to get used to the game. When one of my wingers had the ball, I tried to speed up (R1) some...but lost the ball most of the times. As expected, he scored the first goal, I guess it was Zidane who shot from the edge of the box, good goal. He kept on watching the replay and laughed 'At least a game i'm better in than you are!!!'...(he's not the smartest, he played a guy (me) who played the game for the 2nd time and was so happy...whatever). We reached half-time with him leading. Second half, me playing from left to right, which I prefer above right-left (still do, dunno why) and felt that i got pretty used to the basics. Passing went pretty okey, sometimes was able to turn away from him and even had a few shots (wide and over). He still had more possesion and because he knew how to sprint (R1) better than I did it didn't seem I was going to have a chance. Because of a great v.d. Sar, it still 'only' was 1-0 to him, so I wasn't totally lost. Than, at once, Bergkamp had the ball with loads of space on about 25 m. of the goal. I knew that I had time and need to time my shot (don't overhit it) good. Gauge filled slowly...3/4th and i let loose...Bergkamp shot a fantastic ball, fast, not too high...Barthez chanceless...1-1. The feeling I got there was amazing, it just felt so real! I was happy, didn't knew what to do and watched the replay very slowly (just once though)...after continuing. Till that point I just played the ball around and hadn't much of a chance, the goal was just a great piece of skill, not by me but by Bergkamp. I tried to get more variation into my play, gave my wingers (Zenden and Overmars I believe it where) more balls and tried to R1-run more...still not working but whatever. Then the point came...the most exciting moment in my gaming life till that point (and the most special one till now on...maybe). I remember that so brightly till the moment of now. The curtains in my mates room were open, he was at a chair and me laying on his bed, the wind was slightly blowing which cooled the small room down a bit (just details, but i'll mention it know, because now the part comes i remember best) ...well it was Overmars on the right side of the pitch, underside of the screen, running right. He was sprinting, R1 fully pushed, and there a defender came. Must be Lizarazu, the speedy b**tard. I was on full speed, and the only thing I could think of to go past the little guy was using the outside, close to the sideline. Lizarazu made a sliding-tackle but I went past him somehow and came near the box still running towards the corner-flag. I knew how to cross, 'O' was the button I need to use, but never used it before for crossing, only to kick away long balls from the defence. I tried it and Overmars gave a perfect cross. In a glimp I saw Kluivert standing there, alongside a defender, '[]!!!' flashed through my head and i pressed square. Kluivert jumped...reached above Blanc...headed greatly (what a graphics, so realistic!!!) and the ball went sailing. It seemed to take ages, but it all happened in a few secs...the ball went in, top corner. Barthez was flying, but couldn't get it, because it was such a powerfull and accurate ball. 81st minute, 2-1 up, this is...*BANG*!!! My friend smashed his controller to the ground and pressed the big round button on his PS1...he shut the thing down. He couldn't laugh anymore, only use some dramatic words and kept on saying he couldn't believe it. He said I needed to go home, he didn't understand it (and still needed to shower...he said :eh: ). After that he invited me for a few times, but just to play GranTurismo, no ISS '98 anymore...I felt so unlucky not to be able to play that great game anymore. I couldn't borrow it, because he had a chipped-PS1 and I hadn't...so the only thing I could do was playing my demo-disc with ISS 98 deluxe on it...training training training...but after a few weeks was pretty bored with it...all the times the same match, only for 1 half...I played it for 20 hours I guess...and searched loads of shops for the game, but wasn't able to find it anywhere. A few years later there came the PS2...and I was able to buy my first PES game, PES1...I always kept updated by the PES/ISS games by reading magazines, and when the real thing was in my hands I felt so damn lucky. Right now, at this moment, 19 years old...own PES 1, 2 and 3, 4 coming up, it's a way of life to me. Last week we had a league with 6 mates who play the game frequently from my town (5000 people live here, not big), we made a schedule, drawed (only top teams, I got my non-favorite Arsenal...) and I became champion 'of my town' (really think that, there are 2 guys who can beat me, one in about 2 on 10 games, one in about 3 on 10 games I guess) so I think i'm city's best player know...my results in the league were: 2-2 draw, 3-0 win, 3-1 win, 10-0 win, 8-0 win and 4-2 win in the last match against my biggest rival who won all his games till that point (his goal diff was much more worse than mine ofcourse  ) so I guess I'm the best player of my region (bit hard to say, no tournaments are played here but I guess i'm 'one of the best' then...)...and it all started on that warm-summer-night in '99 (Bryan Adams, write a song for me, or Ratinho...you do!!!)

Bit of a crappy story but felt like writing it down...maybe you can give me your first experiences, I'm pretty interested how you came into the world of ISS/WE/PES...

For now...good night, my biggest post ever on the forums I think...bye from HOT Holland! :issrules:

I remember my first time.......

I was about 15 years old and i'd been on the park with few of my mates drinking cider & cheap piss like lager, after havin a shed load of fine white lightning, one of my mates had a free house so we all went back there.... then i saw her, a real beauty she was with her startling good looks & flashy buttons, i pulled her up and we went up into my mates parents bedroom i laid her down gently, then i started slowly peeling pack the cover.

After pressing the right buttons shes wide open so i stick it right in & turn her on.....she starts to buzz and i fill with excitement!

Then again i start to press all the right buttons and now were really havin fun.....

I'm gonna at it bashing my 'joystick' as hard as i can then the door flys open and one of my mates is stood there with a look of disbelief on his chevy chase, i stop but then i soon realise he wants a bit of the action too, so he comes in an whips out his black turbo joystick and slides it into the free hole......then we're away havin some great 3 way action....

We score at both ends and the noise it tremedous as the climax is reached...almost bringing the house down...... I lay back completely spent after giving it the go of my life and i still love it to this day.......

I didn't exactly play PES, but something which was similar to it. ESPN Super Soccer, I think it was called. Don't know whether it's a real game or just a pirated copy of PES. Well, I bought the game when I ran out of games to buy. The first sports game i ever played. Was quite fun. Started out at ***, and it was difficult as hell. Couldn't be bothered to adjust the things. I always played using Netherlands at that time, and the one-two tactic always worked. I could easily chalk up 6-10 goals using the onw-two tactic alone. Great game!

People, I think I'm getting old. My first soccer game was just "football" in my atari 2600. 2 player for each team!, awesome. :), then world cup in nintendo, then Goal!, how to forget the same player with a jersey of the color of the teams who was wining on the screen of the stadium?, a few plays in Sidekick! on sega, (didnt like it so much, nintendo ruled the 90's) and then a friend bought a cartridge with the cover of some football field with some starnge japanese characters on them...we love it even when we didnt knwo what was about. then ISS came in and we spent hours playing it, I was like 14 years old when it came to my hands... finally we mastered the way how to score, how to get a chilena in a rainy day, how to steal the ball when it was in the air...and then suddenly ISS deluxe appeared... I spent years mastering the game until I saw in a -rent for a game- establishment, a japanese game for n64... konami said in the very start and a ball in front of a porteria was there...waiting. we liked the orcs... :) we liked the bees, we liked the deers, all in there. We didnt know what they were saying, but of course we knew what they meant. ISS 64... eveytime a new game appears of this serie, it seems we have to figure out how we have to dribble the goalkepper. then the best of all of them ISS 2000, we even named some movements as us, the fercinha, the chavinha, á la maurice... My cousins, suddenly we all a football tribe. we played pro evo in ps1, and even in my office we played with the projector of the presentations (great ) pro evo for ps2. I don't get tired of it. I don't like to watch soccer on tv, but I love playing it with a control in my hands or getting dirty on the streeets in real. We love it, admit it. Now I can play without thinking, now it is just pure instinct.

My first ISS-experience was with a friend during the summer of '96. It was during the Euro Championship in England and it rained a lot in Norway that summer. So we got ISS 94 or whatever it was called, and played it all summer, taking breaks to go swimming whenever the weather allowed us to. We discovered already then that this game kicked Fifa's ass easily, and have stayed true to it ever since, really (even though I did flirt with EA's latest release, shame on me).

Looks like I never replied to this post. I remember playing ISS Deluxe on the MegaDrive. It was different because I remember getting kicked by some attractive Brazilian football. First time I'd seen that in a game. I was also impressed with the counter attack strategy which actually seemed to work.

Can't remember if it was this game or another, but there was an option to reduce the number of players fielded and there were some good 7-a-side matches.

In terms of versions I've enjoyed and genuinely been excited about over the years, Id say, the top 5 are:

1 - ISS Pro '98 (the volleys were spectacular)
2 - Pro Evolution Soccer (great full-stretch keeper dives)
3 - WE2002 Online (the good old league days)
4 - WE6FE (the editing hey-day)
5 - Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (so much better than 4)

ISS 64 on the N64 for me. I fondly remember the days of using the analogue stick to put bend on the ball and scoring last minute winners past keepers with Beckham for England  Great game and it also had the scenarios (e.g. you are 3-2 down with 5 minutes to go) which were ace. Why they don't bring these back in the PES games I will never know. That N64 controller was ahead of it's time as the analogue stick use has never really been bettered still to this day IMHO.

Classic game!
